Cruella: Deal Closed! Emma Stone Will Return For a Sequel

Cruella Deal Closed! Emma Stone Will Return For a Sequel

Cruella premiered on May 28 in theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access. Before the release, director Craig Gillespie admitted that there were ongoing conversations about another movie from one of Disney’s funniest villains.

Then, just three days after the premiere, the first rumors about a sequel began to surface. But now it’s official.

Emma Stone will be back in Cruella 2.

Obviously, a sequel without Emma Stone in the starring role would not be very promising.

The actress isn’t the only one who is returning in the sequel. Craig Gillespie will be back in the director’s chair, while Tony McNamara also takes over the script for the new project once again.

This is a sign that Disney sees simultaneous releases in theaters and Disney+  as a really viable path, since, according to Deadline, the deal signed with the actress is beneficial for both sides, no matter if the film is released only in theaters or simultaneously on the big screen and the streaming platform.

Patrick Whitesell, Endeavor’s Executive Chairman, the agency that handles Emma Stone’s career, stated:

“This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent.

We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner.

We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”

Lawsuit no longer makes sense.

It is worth remembering that Emma Stone was the protagonist of a recent rumor related to Scarlett Johansson‘s lawsuit against Disney. According to the rumors, the actress was considering following Black Widow‘s footsteps and sue Disney for the Cruella combined release.

Today’s news moves the rumors away and considerably softens the hostile atmosphere brewing around Disney regarding the company’s handling of actor/actress deals.

Despite the confirmation of Emma Stone’s return, for now, there are not many details about the sequel yet, as the project is in the early stages.
