Since the early days, Stranger Things has been linked to Dungeons and Dragons RPGs; and whenever "strange things" appeared in the town, they immediately connected it to the RPG storylines; see the Demogorgon, which - for those who don't know - is a demon lord in Dungeons and Dragons.
With Vecna, it was no different.
In Dungeons and Dragons, Vecna is the evil god of secrets, the undead, and necromancy. He is usually described as a mummified and desiccated corpse without his left hand and left eye.
Vecna is an anagram for Vance, an ode to the fantasy author Jack Vance, whose works inspired the magic system used in D&D.

With the release of Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix, we have a new villain haunting the town of Hawkins. This time, we were introduced to yet another monster from the Upside World: Vecna.
The name Vecna comes from the Dungeons & Dragons RPG game, mentioned in the series since the first season. In the game, Vecna is a creature that uses a forbidden type of magic to become immortal, which is almost what we see in Stranger Things.
In the series, the monster becomes even stronger with each human it kills. The choice of its victims, however, is not random.
Vecna prefers to possess people who have experienced some traumatic event and are emotionally vulnerable, torturing them with painful memories before ending their lives.
Returning to Dungeons & Dragons. In the game, Vecna was born human centuries ago, and her mother, Mazzell, was executed for practicing sorcery.
So, seeking revenge, Vecna became a master of dark magics, reaching a level no other mortal had ever run.
In Stranger Things, teens compare the monster from Upside World to Vecna for his powers and appearance.
As powerful as the character in the game, Hawkins' Vecna is more dangerous than the Demogorgon, more complex to understand, and harder to fight.
It's not just in the RPG that Vecna has a traumatic past with his family.
In the series, we discover that the monster is Henry Creel, now known as Peter. The character, played by Jamie Campbell, was a child who exhibited strange behavior.
With this, his mother sought professional help to treat his "disturbed nature," but he didn't like that at all. Henry used his powers at first to kill animals until he killed his own family.
Victor Creel, his father, was the only survivor, so that he could take the blame for the crimes.
