Gudetama is a character from Sanrio, the creators behind Hello Kitty, Keroppi, My Melody, Pochacco, and Kuromi. In 2013, the company launched a contest on its rankings page called "Food Character Election," in which fans would vote for the top 20 food-based characters.
The top vote-getter would be promoted to Sanrio's main character lineup. Gudetama won the contest and joined the family, along with KIRIMI-chan, who came in second place.
