Regarded as one of the most talented guitarists of all time, you can find him holding a guitar in the new Funko Pop! Rocks: Eddie Van Halen with Guitar Funko Pop! Vinyl Figure.

Eddie Van Halen was the group leader that bears his last name, Van Halen, for almost 50 years.

The group’s first album, Van Halen, from 1978, includes one song, Eruption, a short 1.42-minute instrumental piece. It is a guitar solo.

Therein lies the inspiration for dozens of hard rock guitarists who would follow in his footsteps: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, and Yngwie Malmsteen, among many others. The group’s first album also featured a version of You Really Got Me by the Kinks.

Every hard rock guitar player knows his solos by heart: songs like Panama, Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, Somebody Get Me a Doctor or Beat In, Michael Jackson’s hit, where he displays all his guitar pyrotechnics.

Van Halen changed the perception of what heavy rock was. Back then, it was a genre of tough guys and dark messages until they arrived.

Then, with the help of lead singer David Lee Roth, Van Halen managed to make hard rock sexy. They gave the genre a playful tone that didn’t exist before.

In Van Halen, Lee Roth’s histrionics and, above all, Eddie Van Halen’s guitar reigned supreme. Fast but melodic at the same time.

Eddie Van Halen has always rebelled against those who accused him of being a scale-eater. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he declared:

“All I know is that rock & roll guitar, like blues guitar, should be melody, speed, and taste, but more importantly, it should have emotion. I just want my guitar playing to make people feel something: happy, sad, even horny.”

Their first albums were fundamental for the construction of modern hard rock after Led Zeppelin: besides the first one already mentioned, Van Halen II (1979) and Women and Children First (1980).

Curiously, the group’s most significant success is a song outside hard rock. It is Jump, in which the keyboards prevail.

It was the year 1984, and heavy metal was in total transformation. What was called hair metal was becoming successful. It was the golden age of the MTV music video network. Never had heavy metal sold so much.

An essential album from that era was Van Halen’s 1984, including Jump. The album reached the second position in the sales charts in the United States.

It was their most enormous success. However, the tour was a torment in terms of coexistence. The singer and the guitarist did not speak to each other. When the tour ended, Lee Roth left the group.

Van Halen recovered from the departure of the charismatic vocalist and hired Sammy Hagar. However, the group did not leave the front line throughout the eighties despite the change.

With the arrival of the nineties, Van Halen, like so many other heavies bands, was cornered by the new movement, grunge, led by Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

In the 2000s, the guitarist had to struggle with alcoholism and cancer. From a recording point of view, the band was not relevant in their last years, but they kept a large following in their live performances.

Van Halen’s last album is from 2012, A Different Kind of Truth, again with Lee Roth as a singer. The last time they performed was at the Hollywood Bowl on October 4, 2015. They played Eruption again.

Their track will continue to influence guitarists for many years to come.
