Created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, the character first appeared in volume 233 of Detective Comics in 1956 but was very different from today's superheroine. Kathy Kane was a wealthy Gotham socialite and a love interest of Bruce Wayne/Batman. It is even said that she was introduced to end any doubts about the nature of the relationship between Batman and Robin. In today's comics version, Batwoman is a pioneer in LGBTQ+ representation and is also the first gay superhero character to have her own live-action series. Ruby Rose, who brought the heroine to life in season 1 of the series, is also an outspoken member of the LGBTQ+ community.
