Pokémon began in games as an RPG for Game Boy where you incarnate a trainer and need to capture the pocket monsters to get stronger and move on.
The game made noise in Japan, and Nintendo commissioned an anime series to promote and sell more games. So far, nothing new. But the first time the rest of the world heard about the franchise was unusual, to say the least.
Who remembers the case of the children who had epileptic seizures after watching an episode of the series? The older ones certainly do.
And this is how the world at first came into contact with Pokémon. Admittedly, it wasn't exactly the best way to start. Still, it worked: all the buzz generated by the case caused the anime to arrive in the United States shortly after (with the episode in question duly cut, of course), where it exploded in popularity in a very short time.
Nintendo released the English version of the Pokémon Red and Blue games soon after, and the little pocket monsters entered people's hearts and never left.
