In 2018,
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse shook up the superhero genre and the studio system behind it. It was an animated film in a world where live-action was the norm.
It centered on Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. And it didn't have just one Spider-Man, but seven of them (including two Peter Parkers, one of whom was a supporting character at best).
Instead of drawing from a classic Spider-Man story, it was based on one of the most convoluted and silly, in which Spider-Man teams up with all the other Spider-People from across the Marvel multiverse.
It was a weird movie. But it was a very, very good odd movie. It used its weirdness to tell a satisfying story about responsibility, family, and self-confidence that worked well or better than any previous Spider-Man movie.
We eagerly await the sequel,
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, set to release on June 2nd, 2023.
The movie promises to bring back many of our favorite Spider-People from the first movie and introduce some new characters, including Spider-Man 2099, the Punk Spider, and the Woman Spider.
Oscar Isaac will play the role of Miguel O'Hara, the 2099 Spider-Man, and Issa Rae will play Jessica Drew, the Woman Spider.
The movie's trailer also shows us the inspired new look for the Vulture and the return of other beloved Spider-Man characters.
One of the exciting changes for the sequel is that instead of multiple Spider-People coming to Miles, he will venture into the multiverse to meet new and old friends and fight for his own existence.
We don't know much more about the plot, but the trailers hint at an epic journey that will take us through various universes and timelines.
