It’s hard to imagine the Marvel Cinematic Universe without Groot, the lovable talking tree that stole our hearts in Guardians of the Galaxy.

But where did this iconic character come from, and how did he evolve over time?

Groot’s origins can be traced back to 1960, when he first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13. Back then, Groot was a monstrous alien invader with little personality or backstory.

He was defeated by a human using termites and seemingly killed off, but he reappeared in various forms over the years.

It wasn’t until 2006 that Groot was truly reinvented and given a new lease on life.

This iteration of the character, created by Keith Giffen and Timothy Greene II, was a Flora colossus from Planet X, a world populated by sentient trees and animals.

This Groot had a much more developed personality and backstory than his predecessors. He began his journey by freeing a captive human, an act that got him exiled from his home planet.

From there, he was captured and imprisoned by the Kree, where he met his lifelong friend and partner in crime, Rocket Racoon.

Together, Groot and Rocket joined a team of former prisoners recruited by the Kree to fight against the Phalanx, a technocratic race seeking to assimilate all other planets into their regime.

This battle would mark Groot’s first experience alongside most of his future fellow Guardians of the Galaxy.

Although Groot was destroyed in the fight, he survived as a single twig, regrowing to his full height thanks to Rocket’s care and attention.

From there, Groot’s story became one of adventure and heroism. He traveled the galaxy with the Guardians, battled all manner of space horrors, and lived on the run with Rocket as a galactic outlaw.

He even gained the ability to speak more than his traditional catchphrase, “I am Groot,” if only for a brief time.

Groot became one of the most beloved characters in Marvel’s canon, with fans of all ages and backgrounds falling in love with his gentle nature and selfless heroism.

But what is it about Groot that makes him so endearing?

Perhaps it’s his childlike innocence, his willingness to put himself in harm’s way to protect others, or his unbreakable bond with Rocket.
