Michael Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He was a dominant force on the court, leading the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships.
However, when he returned to the NBA after a brief retirement, he switched to the number 45 instead of his famous 23.
Jordan returned to the NBA in 1995 with a simple, quick message: "I'm back." However, unlike in his baseball career, Jordan did not choose a new number.
Since the Bulls had retired the number 23 jersey, Jordan saw fit to wear number 45.
The reason for this choice was simple: 45 was the number Jordan wore in high school, and he wanted to return to his roots.
But it didn't last long. Jordan wore the number 45 in only 22 games, and in his 23rd game, Jordan went back to number 23.
After losing a playoff game to the Orlando Magic, Nick Anderson (Magic player) said that Jordan with the 45 was not the same as with the 23. That was the cue he was waiting for!
The change in jersey number was expensive for the Chicago Bulls, as they had to pay a fine for every game in which Michael Jordan did not wear the number 45.
This cost Chicago about $100,000 by the end of the season.
Between you and me, I doubt the Bulls didn't like the return of the 23...
