The product was accidentally created by scientists Noah and Brian Joseph McVicker, who worked at Kutol Products, a soap and cleaning product factory in Cincinnati, Ohio. Initially, they intended to create a product used to clean wallpaper.
However, several features of the final product made it ideal for children. The brothers then founded the Rainbow Crafts company, and in 1956, the white modeling clay, dubbed PLAY-DOH, was launched on the market.
Three new colors joined the PLAY-DOH line the following year - yellow, red, and blue.

Soon after, in 1960, the PLAY-DOH Pete was introduced, which would become the brand's mascot for many years.
