In the Emperor Joker story arc, the Joker has stolen Mister Mxyzptlk’s reality-warping powers and used them to recreate the world in his own image.
In this twisted version of reality, the Joker is not only Batman’s greatest enemy but also his ultimate friend.
The two share a bond based on mutual need and respect, and their partnership is essential to maintaining the delicate balance of power in Gotham City.
The Emperor Joker story arc is a fascinating exploration of the relationship between Batman and the Joker, and it provides a unique perspective on their complicated dynamic.

Emperor Joker starts from a straightforward premise to bring to life one of the strangest Man of Steel stories: What would happen if the Joker had the power of the fifth-dimensional Goblin Mxyzptlk?
The story, imagined and scripted by Joe Kelly and Jeph Loeb, was published in 5 parts in 2000 in Superman comics.
The elf from the 5th dimension Mxyzptlk is bored and tired of the traditional pranks he plays on Superman: changing the Man of Steel’s world to make him speak his name backward is no longer funny.
So he thinks about giving 0.1% of his power to the insane Joker to see what kind of pranks he could think of (since he is so good at tormenting Batman).
However, he is tricked by the Clown of Crime, who gains 99.9% of the Goblin’s power while the latter is left with a tiny 0.1%.
Despite being a Superman story, the plot of Emperor Joker involves the entire DC universe – since the new ruler’s first act is to remake the universe.
The Justice League becomes a pathetic team of insane criminals, the Earth takes on a new shape, and Batman is tortured and killed every night.
Against this backdrop of chaos, the Man of Steel begins to understand what is happening and begins to fight to return the world to normal.
But the madness of the new emperor is not contained to Earth. Darkseid, Spectre, Shazam, Zeus, and other powerful entities are overwhelmed by the villain’s power.
There is no chance for outside help, and Superman is alone in this journey to try to defeat the villain.
What makes this little-known story worth remembering is the mix of sensations it generates and how quickly the tone is switched from comic to macabre. There are overly funny passages, overly darkly humorous passages, and frightening passages in the comic.
But what makes it stick in my memory is the ending. After the Joker is defeated (you knew he would be defeated, right?) by Superman with help from a newly recovered Justice League, we still get severe consequences for Batman.
Having died thousands of times leaves the Gotham Knight wholly broken. Seeing these scenes shows how traumatic the “funny” saga was and reaffirms the constant danger of the Joker.
