Journey to the West is a novel written by Chinese author Wu Chengen during the Ming Dynasty. The novel tells personal stories of the monk Xuanzang in his journeys to the West, in search of the sacred scriptures of Buddhism, adding to it: myths, fantasy, and elements of Chinese folklore, besides creations of the author’s mind, such as the story of a mission given to the monk (Tang Sanzang).
In this mission, he would be accompanied by three protectors, who, in exchange, desired the remission of his sins. These three protectors were: Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing. As a result, the work is considered one of the Four Great Classics of Chinese literature.
The novel’s hero is the magical monkey Sun Wukong (Songokû in Japanese), a boisterous and rowdy character born from a stone egg. After making a series of mischief in the heavenly worlds, Monkey King is converted by the Buddha. He becomes the monk’s faithful disciple, escorting him on his journey and defending him from all dangers.
