John Waters is an American filmmaker, actor, writer, and artist who came to prominence in the 1970s with highly transgressive trash films that, after a while, were elevated to cult status.
The director’s first works were all filmed in the Baltimore area, featuring a troupe of local actors known as the Dreamlanders, which included Divine, Edith Masse, David Lochary, and Susan Walsh.
The films featured characters exaggerated to the extreme, absurd dialogues, and bizarre situations. The so-called “Trash Trilogy” of the director (which I strongly recommend!) is composed of Pink Flamingos (1972), Female Trouble (1974), and Desperate Living (1977), a violent affront to good manners and censorship at the time.
An avowed gay, in recent years, Waters has been a great supporter of the LGBT cause, as well as working as a journalist, artist, actor, and writer.
John Waters is an artist who left his definitive mark on cinema by kicking the door of good manners and also by subversively running away from the big studios to film whatever he wanted.
