The Silver Surfer was conceived in 1966 by Stan Lee. The winged surfer is actually a slave of Galactus, the World Eater. Before becoming his herald, preparing the planets for Galactus to suck all his energy, the surfer was Norrin Radd, an astronomer from the planet Zenn-La who submitted to Galactus’ judgment to spare Zenn-La and his beloved Shalla Ball.
The Surfer is thus a convict, and his fate is to wander eternally, and lonely, through the cosmos in search of an energy source for Galactus. He’s one of Lee’s most psychologically complex characters, thanks to the moral conflict in which he is involved. When he arrived at Earth, his resignation in obeying the master was shaken when he encounters fragile and innocent creatures: the humans. Like a demigod in crisis, the Surfer feels he needs to defend the weakest, but he doesn’t allow himself to rebel against Galactus.
