In the comics, the Red Guardian was introduced in The Avengers #43, released in 1967. Alexi Alanovich Shostakov was one of the Soviet Union’s most skilled pilots trained by Vasily Karpov and used by the government on the country’s most secretive and dangerous missions. His success was publicized by the media, which led to him being decorated a Hero of the Soviet Union.
