The timeless Hispanic legend comes to terrifying life in The Curse of La Llorona movie. A frightening apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate, sealed by her own hand.

A tale of terror and family tragedy originates in early 16th century Mexico. On nights with a full moon, entire neighborhoods would have their sleep disturbed by the insistent cries of a desperate woman. She was searching for her two children. But finding them would be impossible: she had killed them herself.

According to the legend, this weeping woman, as she would be known, was called Maria. In love with a man her family disapproved of, she decided to run away with her lover and had two children. Until one day, Maria discovered that her husband was cheating on her.

Devastated and blind with rage, the woman took her children – symbols of that disastrous marriage – and drowned them in a lake. Two days later, when the fit of anger had passed, Mary returned to the river to find her children. She found them both on the opposite bank – both already lifeless.

Thus, with the unbearable pain of guilt and regret, the filicide died of depression. But her agony would not have ended with her death. Since then, her ghost would wander floating through cities, wearing a white dress and a veil covering her pale face. The specter raises its hands to the sky and cries.

It could be just a sad legend if the story weren’t gaining haunting details. Mary would not only float away in tears. She would also steal children to replace her own.
