The month of June is celebrated around the world as LGBT pride month. It was on June 28, 1969, that the Stonewall Rebellion took place in the United States. Stonewall Inn is the name of a New York bar (the bar still exists), which in the 1960s was very popular among the LGBT community. In 1969, being gay was a crime in much of the United States, including New York City.

The police used to turn a blind eye, but on June 28, they decided to raid the bar and arrested several customers, especially cross-dressing and drag queens.

The people rebelled, threw objects at the police, and set fires. The police and firefighters arrived, and the rioters excused themselves. But for the next five days, they gathered in front of Stonewall to protest violence against the LGBT+ community.

What happened at the Stonewall Inn was impossible to ignore. Newspapers like the New York Times and the New York Post covered the events. What started as a revolt against police oppression in the bar turned into a fight for LGBT rights more broadly. No one was going to hide anymore. In 1970, the year after the Stonewall Riots, the first LGBT parades took place in the US, celebrating the event’s anniversary.
