The band was founded by Kent State, Gerald Casale, and Mark Mothersbaugh, making a massive success in the ’80s with the new wave’s explosion.

The song “Whip It” achieved considerable success in the American charts. The unparalleled success the band has achieved with this song is sometimes called one-hit-wonder. The song later regained part of its initial fame when re-recorded by Nirvana.

Their style has been classified as punk rock, post-punk, or art-rock, but they are usually categorized as new wave or synth-pop. The group’s music and style emphasize kitsch science fiction, with touches of surrealist humor, via minimalist and synthetic instrumentation. The band’s sound influenced both the new wave of the time and today’s alternative rock groups, as well as memorable video clips.

The band drew attention for forming a concept, the de-volution, in which its members believed that the human race had reached its apex and was “de-evolving,” returning to the age of caves.
