On October 22, 1990, Pearl Jam took the stage for the first time. Where? At the Off Ramp Cafe, a bar located in the old and charismatic Seattle, the enchanted place of worship for the staunch followers of the grunge scene that, in the nineties, ravished not only states of mind but also comforted the day-to-day existence in flannel shirts.
It wasn’t Pearl Jam who were taking their chances on stage yet. Instead, Mookie Blaylock was an unpretentious and honest band that was reborn from Mother Love Bone after the tragic death of lead singer Andrew Wood.
Stone Gossard on guitar, Jeff Ament on bass, Mike McCready also on guitar prowess, and one Eddie Vedder, a charismatic surfer boy with a rich soul and a kind heart, who had come from San Diego to try his luck as a vocalist in the more grim Seattle. At the time, Dave Krusen took over on drums, now given to Matt Cameron. The liberating ‘Release’ was the first song to be released from the small but historic line-up.
Later, the quintet changed its name to Pearl Jam. That’s right. The ones that are now the veteran and consistent Pearl Jam. That band has something that can’t be explained. The rest is history.
