Sam has become a favorite cult character among horror fans, but most fans don't know that he has a shockingly ancient origin.
Michael Dougherty's horror anthology film follows different stories that span a single night as various members of the community break the rules of the holiday.
The only common element each story has is Sam, an innocent-looking trick-or-treater in a potato sack mask and orange clothing who observes the horrors of each story and even causes some mayhem of his own.
He has become an iconic horror character over the years, but don't let his appearance fool you: he's actually much older than he looks.
Trick'r Treat is a comic book spin-off of Trick 'r Treat: Days Of The Dead written by Michael Dougherty, Todd Casey, Zach Shields, and Marc Andreyko with art by Fiona Staples, Stephen Byrne, Stuart Sayger, and Zid.
Trick 'r Treat: Days Of The Dead spans several periods in time, with the earliest being set in Ireland during the 17th century and the latest being set sometime in the 20th century.
This gives readers a chance to experience Halloween across several centuries and gives Sam himself a somewhat surprising origin.
In the anthology's second story, "Corn Maiden," readers are taken back to 1853 and follow Sarah Bledsoe as she and her father travel west to expand a railroad.
Along the way, they encounter a tribe of indigenous people. There, Sarah meets P'Wani after traveling to a cornfield and getting lost.
The two girls quickly become friends, and P'Wani talks to Sarah about her culture. As a gift, she gives her a doll, but trick-or-treat fans soon realize it is actually Sam.
As P'Wani tells Sarah that "he is ancient and very powerful," it is confirmed that Sam is not just any demon.
The fact that he is considered old in the 1850s hints that Sam has been around a long time.
