Disney’s “Dumbo” has been delighting generations around the world for 80 years. Chances are, even your grandparents saw it when it first hit theaters.
The story of the little elephant with giant ears amuses and moves people of all ages. I have selected 10 curiosities about one of the most beloved Disney characters:
1. “Dumbo” is based on a book
The origin of “Dumbo” is a relative mystery. He is based on a “roll-a-book,” a kind of book/box where the person turns a knob to see the other slides. Of this version, with no saved copy, another book in traditional format was written.
It contained 36 illustrated pages under the title “Dumbo the Flying Elephant.” Both versions are authored by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. The originals date back to 1939, and once Walt Disney found the work, he bought the copyright to produce the film released in 1941.
2. Dumbo’s companion was different
The little mouse Timothy who accompanies Dumbo in the cartoon, did not exist in the book. Initially, the one who helps the little elephant is a bird named Red, and they both end the story in the book by going to Hollywood to work in movies.
3. Dumbo was almost on the cover of Time magazine
The traditional Time magazine had plans to print one of its covers with the beloved flying elephant. However, with the attack on the Pearl Harbor base, they decided to adopt a more serious stance and left the article about the “Mammal of the Year” only as an inside addition,
4. Animators’ strike turned into a joke in the movie
An intense strike of animators plagued Disney during the production of “Dumbo.” Because of this, it is rumored that the studio decided to include the circus clowns scene demanding a pay raise only to ridicule the strike.
5. The shortest animated film
At only 64 minutes long, “Dumbo” is the shortest Disney classic ever produced by the studio.
6. Walt Disney’s favorite movie
Walt Disney himself stated that “Dumbo” held a special place in his heart. “From the very beginning, ‘Dumbo’ was a happy movie,” the genius once said. “We had no restrictions at all on the story, so we could let our imaginations travel,” he continued.
7. The song “Baby Mine” was nominated for an Oscar
The music that plays in the beautiful scenery where Dumbo’s mother cradles him with her trunk through the bars of a trailer was nominated for an Oscar but lost out to a piece from the musical “If You Were Honest.” Still, “Dumbo” won the statuette for Best Soundtrack.
