The Princess and the Frog is the story of Tiana, a bright, persevering young woman and excellent cook who dreams of having her own restaurant. However, when Prince Naveen arrives at the masquerade ball, the ambitious Dr. Facilier turns him into a frog.
Disney’s princess stories have always been a hit with kids, but it wasn’t until 2009 with The Princess and the Frog that they introduced the first African-American princess.
The story is set in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and brings several references to the masters of this musical style. Did you like it? Then stay tuned for some curiosities about the movie:
Did you know that…
1 – The streetcar that Tiana takes to work has a label with the inscription “A113”? This is a reference to the animation department room at the California Institute of the Arts. This inscription has been hidden before in “Puppy Life” and in some episodes of “The Simpsons.”
2 – Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Tyra Banks were considered for the lead role dubbing? The protagonist ended up being Anika Noni Rose.
3 – The name of the crocodile Louis is in honor of Louis Armstrong, the jazz singer, who was nicknamed ‘Dippermouth,’ ‘Satchelmouth,’ and ‘Satchmo’ because of his incredible musical talent?
4 – The band Louis plays is Firefly Five Plus Lou, a reference to a jazz band called Firehouse Five Plus Two, formed by members of the Disney animation studios? The pianist is a caricature of the animator Frank Thomas, musician of Firehouse Five.
5 – The animation style was first influenced by another great Disney success, “Lady and the Tramp,” for the city scenes, and “Bambi” for the forest scenes? In the opinion of the film’s directors, these animations are at the top among Disney classics.
6 – The star that Ray calls Evangeline, his great love, is actually the planet Venus? He is known as the Roman goddess of love.
7 – Mama Odie was inspired and created in honor of the famous late New Orleans storyteller Coleen Salley, including her voice? Coleen met several times with the director but did not live to see the film. She passed away before the release, but her name is mentioned in the end credits. Don’t they look alike?
