The cutest symbol of the Coca-Cola brand announcements, the animate polar bears, completed 27 years. In this quarter of a century, they have been enchanting the public in advertisements full of emotion. The debut of the furry ones in movement happened during the Oscar ceremony transmission in February 1993, when they appeared on TVs all over the planet. Called “Northern lights,” the ad was part of the “Always Coca-Cola” campaign and had an immediate positive repercussion.
Although polar bears have been in Coca-Cola print ads since 1922, the ad’s creator, Ken Stewart, says it was Morgan, his dog, who made him remember the animals. He decided then that the commercial would show the bears sitting on the Arctic ice, settling down to watch one of nature’s most fascinating spectacles: the aurora borealis. And so it was done: huge bears with eyes on the light show and their Coca-Cola bottles.
