Pop! Albums: Queen – News of the World

Funko has just released a new Pop! An album based on the cover of Queen’s 1977 album News of the World. Regarded as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, featuring classics like “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions,” News of the World is one of Queens best LPs.

News of the World (1977), Queen’s sixth album, was part of a moment of change for the band. Having achieved fame and reached the point of being revered for their complex recordings (especially the albums A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races), the band found themselves in a musical moment that required a step in a completely different direction.

The album title, News of the World, came from a British Sunday tabloid, and the cover, with a robot having accidentally killed the band, was made by artist Frank Kelly Freas, who in 1953 had illustrated the cover of the October edition of Astounding Science Fiction. The cover featured a robot holding a dead man, with the legend, “Please… fix it, Daddy?” and was made to represent Tom Godwin’s tale The Gulf Between. Roger Taylor, a science fiction fan, had the magazine and proposed that the band get in touch with the artist and ask him to change the concept, putting the band in the place of the dead man. The contact was made, and Frank Kelly Freas accepted the proposal.

News of The World presented to the world of music some of the songs that would become true rock classics. The resounding commercial success at the time of its release earned Queen platinum certificates in markets such as the US and UK, as well as reaching the top of the charts worldwide.
