Until the premiere of Mulan, thousands of girls around the world had as female references in the Walt Disney films like Cinderella (1950), Sleeping Beauty (1960), or The Little Mermaid (1989); members of royalty whose only goal in life was to find a prince to marry.
Mulan is the first Asian protagonist, who is also not the daughter of kings or princes and whose rebelliousness is not linked to escaping to a party with crystal shoes or getting out of the water and exploring the land world. Still, her motive for disobeying is to save her father’s life and not disgrace her family.
Fa Mulan is an only child, and when the Emperor’s army calls up her elderly father to fight the Huns, she decides to abandon her assigned role, find a groom, and get married, to pose as a young soldier so that her father doesn’t have to go to war.
Clever, witty, and brave, Mulan achieves the most admirable goal of all Disney characters: to protect her father from certain death and save China.
With a somewhat introverted personality at the beginning but determined at the end, independent and feisty, she paved the way for other female characters that stand out for their characters, such as Moana, Merida, or Tiana.
The character is inspired by Hua Mulan, the protagonist of a 4th-century poem entitled The Ballad of Mulan, a Chinese legend in which, in the absence of an older brother, a woman dresses as a warrior and joins the army so that her father does not have to go.
