A Surf of Nostalgia: Celebrating the Go-Go’s “Vacation” Album

Time has a funny way of shaping our experiences with music.

An album, a song, or even a single note can instantly transport us back to a specific moment, a fleeting feeling, or a bygone era.

As we ride the waves of nostalgia, we come across the Go-Go’s “Vacation” album, which celebrates its 41st anniversary this year.

The all-girl rock group’s sophomore release, “Vacation,” was a unique brew of teenage dreams and California surf rock that defined the summer of 1982.

Following their chart-topping debut, Beauty and the Beat, the Go-Go’s quickly rode their success wave, dropping Vacation with its infectious title track.

Even as echoes of their debut hits like “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” lingered in the air, the bubbly single “Vacation” surfed right onto the radio, making history as the first-ever cassette single.

Its playful music video, featuring the band members cheekily pretending to be water skiers, added to the album’s vibrant persona.

Back in the 80s, album release dates were mysterious, elusive events, and many a fan found themselves calling up record stores daily for updates.

The thrill of finally spotting “Vacation” ‘s kitschy cover, designed by Grammy-winning artist Mick Haggerty, in the new release rack was one of pure, unadulterated joy.

The journey home, with the album securely in one’s possession, was a ride filled with anticipation and excitement.

Upon arriving home, the ritual would begin. Pouring over liner notes and analyzing every word and note was all part of the thrill.

“Vacation” carried the same unique sound that had made Beauty a hit, but now it was refined and infused with the polish of California surf rock.

The artwork’s shine was mirrored perfectly by the luster of the music.

Yet, “Vacation”, while starting off strong, seemed to stretch itself thin.

The pressure to follow up their best-selling debut led to some of the band’s early live setlist favorites appearing on the album, diluting what could have been a stronger tracklist.

Songs like “Cool Jerk” and “Beatnik Beach” were fillers, more aligned with the album’s beach theme than standing on their own merit.

Jane Wiedlin’s tendency to rely heavily on rhyming dictionaries also failed to help matters.

But there was Kathy Valentine, whose contributions were able to shore up the band’s effort, contributing the effervescent title track, “We Don’t Get Along,” and the ethereal closing ballad, “Worlds Away.”

As the band’s dynamics became more apparent, “Vacation” offered listeners a more intimate look into the Go-Go’s, a peek behind the veil.

Despite its shortcomings, “Vacation” was a landmark moment for the band and fans alike. It was the soundtrack to the summer of 1982, shaping lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Through ups and downs, breakups, and reunions, the Go-Go’s and “Vacation” remain an integral part of rock history and the hearts of fans across the globe.

And so, as we commemorate “Vacation” ‘s 41st anniversary, let us remember the pure joy, the thrill, and the timeless magic that the Go-Go’s brought into our lives.
