One of the more mysterious Star Wars projects on Lucasfilm’s list of upcoming releases is Taika Waititi’s Rogue Squadron. After directing the first season finale of The Mandalorian and voicing the IG-11 droid, Waititi has a chance to tell his own Star Wars story alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns, screenwriter of the multi-award-winning 1957.
Now that Thor: Love and Thunder has reached the post-production stage, Taika Waititi turns his attention to his Star Wars project. The director is set to write and direct one of the upcoming new films in the Star Wars franchise after the end of the Skywalker Saga.
He spoke during an interview with Wired about what we can expect. According to Waititi, development is still at a very early stage, but there is already a story thought out that should very soon create the writing of a full script. Without giving away too many details, the filmmaker said:
“But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!”
The film still has no title or release date. However, when it was officially announced at Disney Investor Day 2020, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, said,
“Star Wars’ theatrical slate is pushing forward into a new future era. Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and unique. His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”
The Star Wars franchise continues to grow exponentially, although many fans find it slow compared to the accelerated pace of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. With Patty Jenkins, Kevin Feige, and Taika Waititi‘s films, a new timeline should take place in the Skywalker Saga.
With no title, cast, or further information yet, the Star Wars film written and directed by Waititi also has no release date.
Patty Jenkins‘ film is the only one with a set title for now. Rogue Squadron is scheduled to hit theaters in 2023 and will feature the story of a new generation of starfighter pilots.
