Star Wars Episode I is considered by many fans of the series to be the most boring of all, precisely because it features some scenes that apparently do not make much sense.
One of the scenes that have always bothered part of the Star Wars fandom is the final battle between Qui-Gon Jin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul, where the Sith alone can handle a Jedi Master and a Padawan without much trouble.
The difference in power between the Sith and the Jedi itself was not a problem, but the lack of justification for this apparent difference was.
This fact bothered the fandom for so long that part of the fans defended the theory that Darth Maul's lightsaber prowess was only greater because George Lucas needed a good action scene at the end of the film.
Whether the theory is true or not, we will never know. However, we finally have a good explanation that justifies the difference in the abilities of the Jedi and Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in Star Wars: Into The Dark, released by Claudia Gray.
The plot takes place 200 years before Episode I and shows a prosperous and staunch High Republic, where the Jedi ruled the Galaxy and the Sith forces waned more and more each day.
There were few Jedi who eventually gave in to the temptation of the Dark Side, and few records of new Sith Lords appearing across the Galaxy.
So it's said in the book that the Jedi Council began to determine that training and improvement with the lightsaber should no longer be a priority for the Jedi because the battle against Siths would no longer be so recurrent.
Thus, each Jedi began to learn the "basics" of lightsaber combat and spent more time mastering the force. The result was seen 200 years later when we saw an experienced Jedi Master like Qui-Gon Jin being no match for Darth Maul's abilities.
