The animated The Witcher spin-off, slated to premiere in 2021 on Netflix, will follow Geralt’s predecessor.
After the recent teaser for The Witcher season 2, which revealed a focus on Ciri’s (Freya Allan) journey and will explore the father/daughter relationship dynamic between Ciri and Geralt, we now have news of the animated film.
Netflix has released that the story of The Witcher spin-off, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will center on Vesemir (played by Kim Bodnia in the live-action series), the witcher responsible for training Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill in the live-action).
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the original series, will also serve as showrunner and executive producer of Nightmare of the Wolf. Directing will be handled by Kwang Il Han (“The Boondocks”), and Beau DeMayo, the screenwriter of The Witcher, is set to write the script. Korean company Studio Mir will handle the animation.
According to Hissrich, Nightmare of the Wolf will explore Vesemir’s past as the old witcher begins to question his work and how it affects the world around him. The animated film will also give viewers a chance to understand the relationship between General and Ciri better.
In Hissrich‘s words, “Families are multi-generational. The things I teach my children, I learned from the generation ahead of me. When we meet Geralt in The Witcher he is a full adult, he’s 100 years old and he’s been living on his own for a very long time. But you can’t help wondering how he learned the things he practices regularly and is going to teach Ciri.”
DeMayo, meanwhile, thinks that Nightmare of the Wolf is an excellent opportunity for the creative team to offer something new to the audience that will bring back the sense of wonder from the first season of the live-action series.
