In 1999, The Matrix completely shook up the world of cinema! Heavily inspired by anime films like Ghost in the Shell, the Wachowski sisters completely changed the language of science fiction movies with a series of visual metaphors that left their mark on pop culture.

Almost 20 years later, the franchise will rise from the ashes with a new film: The Matrix Resurrections.

The new film promises to continue the themes that challenged our notions of reality, but in an updated form to include the tremendous technological advances of recent years.

What to expect from Matrix 4?

Unraveling the mysteries of the simulation is one of the most exciting parts of the Matrix franchise, so, understandably, the trailer has avoided giving too many details about the story.

But from what I can see, Neo is back in the Matrix, but he is having trouble remembering the past.

Assuming the identity of Thomas Anderson again, he is back to taking blue pills on the recommendation of his psychologist.

One day, he decides to stop and realizes that there is something wrong in the world around him.

To face this world that wants to keep him ignorant, he will need the help of new and old allies, as well as to rely on a mysterious figure that seems strangely familiar.

Who’s back in the cast?

The triumphant return of the Matrix franchise would not be complete without the presence of Keanu Reeves in the role of Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity.

The pair starred in the most intense action scenes of the trilogy, but the characters will no longer meet in the new film.

In addition to the main characters, other actors will also be back in the new sequel, including Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson, and Lambert Wilson as the Merovingian.

But it has already been confirmed that some important figures will not be appearing in Matrix Resurrections.

The disturbing Agent Smith, who avidly hunts Neo throughout the trilogy, is not expected to return, as actor Hugo Weaving has been busy these past few years.

Another significant absence is Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus, who delivered the famous blue and red pills in the first film. However, it seems that this role will be played by a new actor…

Who is new in the cast?

The cast brings together some big names, but many have not yet had their roles revealed. Along with Bugs, played by Jessica Henwick, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will feature prominently among the protagonists.

I know that Neil Patrick Harris will be Neo’s psychologist, while Jonathan Groff will be on the villain’s side.

However, no information has been released about Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman, and Christina Ricci.

What happened to Morpheus?

It seems that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character is Morpheus himself, whether he is a younger version of the hero or a digital reconstruction created by the Matrix.

The explanation for this change may lie in a game considered canon by the Wachowski sisters but forgotten by many fans: Matrix Online.

In the game, Morpheus was determined to rescue Neo’s body from the machines. To do so, he devised a plan that involved attacking different points in the Matrix, but in one of these attacks, he ended up dying, which would justify the drastic change in the new film.

Unfortunately, the servers were shut down in 2009, so there is no way to play this story anymore.
