promises to take the What If…? Marvel Universe to places never before explored through a simple question: what if major MCU events had happened a little differently? Showing various heroes and villains in unique situations, ranging from T’Challa becoming Starlord to Peggy Carter as Captain Britannia, among many others.
A new trailer has revealed even more of the alternate realities that the animated series will feature. I’ve prepared this list with
everything you need to notice in the new for you who don’t want to miss any details of what’s to come! What If…? trailer #1 – Killmonger Hero?
The new trailer starts with an easily recognizable scene from the
MCU before introducing a completely unexpected change. At first, we see Tony Stark in a moment that goes back to the first Iron Man, right before he suffers the attack that would lead him to become a hero.
However, he is saved by none other than
Killmonger, who launches a missile away with only his hands. The scene indicates that the character will take on a hero’s role from one of these realities. #2 – Doctor Strange Falling Into The Multiverse?
Doctor Strange enters the scene, suffering a fall that takes him to a sort of portal, distorting the character and everything around him.
It is unclear what exactly is happening to him. Still, unlike others we see throughout the trailer,
Stephen Strange does not seem to be an alternate version — rather, he is being taken to one of these different realities. #3 – Guardians of The Galaxy at the Battle of Tokyo?
The trailer shows the classic scene of the
Avengers in the battle of New York, while the narration says that time is changeable. At the same time, the iconic moment changes, and we see a new team of heroes in place of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It seems that the Guardians of the Galaxy are the ones who will save the day — and that the battle takes place in Tokyo.
The scenery in the background is quite different from what is currently seen with the Avengers, and one of the signs has “Shibuya” written in Japanese, which is the name of a famous neighborhood in Tokyo.
In addition, this group of heroes features the alternate versions of
Starlord and Gamora that the series promises to introduce, with T’Challa in Quill‘s place and the so-called *Gamora, Daughter of Thanos at his side. The rest of the team includes a version of Black Panther and the presence of Thor. #4 – T’Challa as Starlord
will feature a reality where What If…? T’Challa was taken into space by Yondu instead of Peter Quill. Here, T’Challa is Starlord, in the same scene where Quill takes the orb containing the Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy’s first movie. #5 – Hulk
Hulk also made a few appearances in the trailer, though it is unclear how he or the reality he is in differ from the versions we know. In one of the moments, he’s battling a seemingly endless horde of enemies. Still, the moment is brief, and it is not exactly defined what he is fighting against. #6 – Thor Going Up Against Robots
Thor also jumps into battle, but his enemies are easier to recognize. The scene begins with what looks like to be several robots flying around as they approach the God of Thunder. Thor is confronting one of them directly, although this is not the last time we see an army of robots in the trailer. #7 – Loki Versus Nick Fury
Another Asgardian who makes his presence known is
Loki. The God of Mischief leads a large army, which looks to be made up of Lokis or warriors dressed very similarly to their leader. There are four prominent figures close to the character, although it is not clear who they are. They might be the Warriors Three, perhaps alongside Lady Sif.
On the opposite side, we see none other than
Nick Fury, who leads his own forces against the Asgardians. #8 – Howard, The Duck
Howard The Duck will be making a new appearance in the MCU.
It turns out that the character has only been shown three times so far, very briefly, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and this looks like the opportunity to get to see Howard for longer on screen.
He is not an essential piece of the trailer, but he is what a considerable part of the fans focused on.
#9 – Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers
One of the
first revelations was that we would see What If…? Peggy Carter become Captain Britannia. Here, we get to see her in action. But she is not alone: she is joined by no other than Steve Rogers in an armor created by Howard Stark.
Despite not becoming a super-soldier,
Steve has not given up fighting. The trailer doesn’t show him without the armor, but it had been previously revealed that he would be assuming this role in the story. #10 – Killmonger Fighting for Wakanda?
Killmonger makes another appearance in a moment that seems to indicate he will be on the heroes’ side. This time, the character enters the scene on a rhinoceros, arriving at a battlefield where warriors from Wakanda, including the Dora Milaje, are up against an army of robots.
He joins them as they confront the robots, and while it’s not clear where the showdown takes place, the presence of an army from Wakanda certainly harkens back to the event taking place in the nation itself.
#11 – Doctor Strange Out of Control?
After being transported in a very mysterious way at the trailer’s beginning,
Stephen Strange shows up a few more times, and none of his scenes seem to indicate that the Sorcerer Supreme is okay. This time, the scenery catches the eye as it is a destroyed place in an apocalyptic environment.
The wizard shouts and uses his powers in the midst of this, although no enemies are visible. It is worth noting that he seems to have someone at his side. To the right of the image, another person seems to be on the ground, possibly unconscious.
#12 – Doctor Strange and Captain Peggy
Doctor Strange reappears with an extremely haggard face and deep dark circles under his eyes. He meets with Peggy Carter, questioning who she is. Once again, the Sorcerer Supreme himself does not appear to be an alternate version of himself, but rather someone interacting with this other reality where Peggy introduces herself as Captain Carter. #13 – Arnim Zola
Arnim Zola is another returning character in Unfortunately, not much is shown of the character, although his brief appearance indicates that he is not in a good situation, as his only speech is a curse in German. What If…? #14 – The Watcher
You can’t help but notice the strange being with robes and a frighteningly oversized head. But, despite his very distinctive look, he is a very important figure both for
and for the comics themselves. What If…? The Watcher has been present in several important sagas and is always a sign that something big is coming.
Although Marvel Studios has presented him only as a kind of narrator for this multiverse tour, the presence of Uatu the Watcher can show us the way to what the MCU holds for us.
The cosmic being’s presence had already been confirmed earlier, with actor
Jeffrey Wright being cast as the voice. #15 – Spider-Man Versus Scarlet Witch?
In one brief moment, we see
Spider-Man on the scene, apparently battling someone. The moment doesn’t show who his enemy is — but another scene in the trailer seems to hint that the showdown here is against Scarlet Witch. Wanda is being trapped by what looks like webs but soon uses her powers to break free. #16 – Zombies
Another version of
Captain America that has been confirmed in the series before is his zombie counterpart. The hero, however, will not be the only one to become undead. Iron Man also features as a zombie, leaving plenty of opportunity for even more Avengers members in zombie form. #17 – Thor’s Origin
Thor’s origin in the MCU should also be revisited in the animated series. In one brief moment, we see the God of Thunder in civilian clothes just after Hawkeye is aiming an arrow that may be meant for him. If the scene looks a little familiar, that’s because it is: something very similar happens in the Asgard hero’s first film. #18 – A Little Shuri
In yet another fight scene with female warriors from Wakanda, a still-child
Shuri joins the battle. The character has its signature weapons, as well as the Dora Milaje‘s support. It is also worth noting the presence of another character on the left side of the image, who is involved in the fight along with the warriors. #19 – Ego, The Living Planet
Coming straight from Marvel’s space universe,
Ego, the Living Planet, is returning. Peter Quill‘s father and antagonist from will be back, but his appearance doesn’t give much insight into what we’ll see in the reality in which this takes place. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 #20 – The Ancient One
Despite meeting an end in the
Doctor Strange movie, the Ancient One has already made a comeback in the MCU’s live-action films. It looks like she will return once again, given that the trailer shows her facing either something or someone. What If…? #21 – The Black Widow With a Shield
Peggy will not be the only one to get a shield. At one point, Black Widow also appears in a slightly different uniform, notably carrying a shield.
Her version looks similar to the
Red Guardian‘s shield, David Harbour’s character in the movie. Black Widow #22 – Queen Ramonda Leading the Dora Milaje
Queen Ramonda, the mother of T’Challa and Shuri, leads the Dora Milaje into battle. She never appeared as a warrior in the films, but the alternate reality seems to change that. #23 – Vision Pulling Out His Own Stone
, fans suffered right beside Avengers: Infinity War Wanda when the Scarlet Witch needed to destroy the Mind Stone to stop Thanos, taking the Vision‘s life in the process. Here, there’s a slightly different version of that moment: instead of her, the one who seems to be trying to destroy the Mind Stone is Vision himself. #24 – Scott Lang’s Head
One of the most unusual things is
Scott Lang‘s head inside a kind of jar or helmet and completely isolated from his body. The scene is brief, and it is difficult to identify the character just by his head, but the subtitles of the official video confirm that it is Ant-Man. Could this be a futuristic version of reality where he can survive without his body? #25 – T’Challa and Yondu Versus the Collector
Right at the end,
T’Challa and Yondu are facing an alternate version of the Collector – far stronger physically than any time we’ve seen him in the MCU. However, despite his strength, he doesn’t seem to do very well in combat, being used as Star-Lord and Yondu punching bag. #26 – Stained-Glass Windows
The trailer is finished with a series of stained glass windows, each showing something different. While many are just elements already seen in the video, some bring something new. Among them, it seems that we will see Tony as Iron Man in some alternate version besides his Zombie version. Also worth mentioning is the presence of characters like the
Red Skull and Proxima Midnight. #27 – The New Poster
The poster that was released along with the trailer also brought some interesting details. On the front, we see characters that had already been released, emphasizing
Captain Britannia, Steve‘s armor, T’Challa as Starlord, and the zombie Captain America, this time accompanied by a zombie version of Hawkeye.
On the other hand, the upper part of the image details some exciting elements, like
Gamora in Thanos-based armor and weapon.
However, the biggest highlights are
Spider-Man, wearing the Cloak of Levitation, and a sentient that seems to be a mixture of Vision and Ultron in possession of all the Infinity Stones. While five of them are embedded in his armor, the sixth remains on his forehead, as does the Vision with his Mind Stone.
